Newcastle United had two top goalkeeper targets at the start of the summer transfer window.
Giorgi Mamardashvili was a major target for Newcastle United, with Toon officials holding talks to sign the Georgia international ahead of Euro 2024.
However, Mamardashvili proved to be too expensive for Newcastle.
That was a blow, and now the 23-year-old could be on the move. Mamardashvili is in talks to sign for Liverpool, with the Reds planning to acquire Alisson Becker’s future replacement well in advance.
It will be a major signing for Liverpool if they can pull a deal off, and now Newcastle’s other major goalkeeper target could be on the move too.
Newcastle United wanted Aaron Ramsdale
As well as Mamardashvili, Newcastle United were also interested in signing Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal.
He has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium all summer, with Ramsdale losing his place in the Arsenal starting XI last season to David Raya.

Geordie Boot Boys were told in May that Eddie Howe wanted Newcastle to sign Ramsdale from Arsenal, but a deal did not come to fruition.
Newcastle held talks to sign Ramsdale, but he remains in North London. However, that might not be the case for much longer.
Ramsdale receives loan offer
That is because Ramsdale is attracting interest from Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.
According to the Guardian, Wolves have submitted an offer to sign Ramsdale on loan from Arsenal. The offer also includes an option to buy at the end of the season.
However, the Guardian add that Wolves are aware that Arsenal would prefer to move Ramsdale on permanently, while he is also attracting interest from Ajax and Southampton.
Newcastle powerless despite Eddie Howe’s admiration of Ramsdale
It must be frustrating for Eddie Howe. He is a big fan of Ramsdale, having worked with him before at Bournemouth. The £30million stopper was identified as a player he would like at Newcastle, yet those plans were shelved when the Magpies failed to qualify for Europe.
That resulted in Newcastle scrapping their plan to sign a top level goalkeeper to compete with Nick Pope. Instead, they targeted James Trafford, with the view to him acting as deputy and eventually becoming good enough to take Pope’s place.
Even that plan failed, with Newcastle having to bring in Odysseas Vlachodimos to ensure that Elliot Anderson would sign for Nottingham Forest. That deal was vital for Newcastle’s PSR position, and they had to sign Vlachodimos to protect Forest’s own financial position.
Now Newcastle could loan Vlachodimos out, while Eddie Howe is no closer to getting the competition he craved for Pope.
Instead, Mamardashvili is being set up to become Liverpool’s future number one, while Ramsdale could have the chance to head to Molineux.
All the while, there is surely no way that Newcastle can challenge for the 26-year-old, as they are totally focussed on getting a centre-back through the door. After that, it will be about trying to get a winger.
The budget will not stretch to secure a player like Ramsdale, despite him being one of Eddie Howe’s top targets earlier this summer.
