Liverpool could be about to do what Newcastle United failed to do earlier this summer.
Goalkeeper has been a problem position for the Magpies, with two new shot-stoppers arriving at St James’ Park. However, neither are going to challenge Nick Pope for the number one spot at Newcastle United.
Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy are part of Eddie Howe‘s first-team squad, but do not fit the brief of what the Newcastle manager wanted.
Howe wanted Newcastle to sign competition for Pope, as he aimed to ensure he was not left short like he was last season when the England international suffered a major shoulder injury.
Liverpool getting closer to signing Giorgi Mamardashvili
That is why Newcastle were interested in Giorgi Mamardashvili, but he could now be on his way to Liverpool.

It was reported earlier this week that Liverpool were working on a deal for Mamardashvili, and now there has been an update on the Reds’ pursuit of the Valencia goalkeeper.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Mamardashvili, with the view to loaning him out for one or two years.
Romano wrote on X: “Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Giorgi Mamardashvili. He’s keen on the move even spending one or two years elsewhere on loan. Bournemouth open to signing him, then he’d become #LFC new GK after Alisson. Agents now in Valencia for club talks. NO agreement yet.”
Newcastle United tried to sign Mamardashvili in June
Liverpool are seriously planning for the future if they complete a deal for Mamardashvili. He will be Alisson Becker’s replacement, whenever that time comes.
Their plan would be to loan him out, with Bournemouth seemingly poised to benefit if the Georgia international heads to Merseyside.
Liverpool’s interesting approach comes after Newcastle failed to bring the 23-year-old to St James’ Park.
Newcastle were led to believe they could sign Mamardashvili earlier this summer, only for a deal to collapse after talks with Valencia. There was even speculation that Newcastle had bid £35million for Mamardashvili, but that may have been premature.
In the end, Mamardashvili was too expensive for Newcastle, while he wanted assurances that he would be the guaranteed number one. Those assurances did not arrive, as the Magpies get set to stick with Pope.
Newcastle could still sign another goalkeeper this summer
Despite having five senior stoppers, with two arriving this summer, it has been reported that Newcastle could sign another goalkeeper before the transfer window closes.
James Trafford has been linked with Newcastle, having been close to a move to St James’ Park earlier in the summer. However, that deal was put on hold when Vlachodimos arrived amid Newcastle’s PSR fiasco on June 30th.
Signing another goalkeeper would be a strange decision, especially given how stretched Newcastle’s budget is. If anything, one needs to leave.
Martin Dubravka is the leading candidate to depart, with the Slovakian in the final year of his contract on Tyneside.
It was reported earlier this summer that Dubravka would probably leave Newcastle, but a deal is yet to materialise.
