As Newcastle United close in on a deal for Marc Guehi, attention will turn back to attacking reinforcements.

The Magpies look set to splash out on a centre-back, with Marc Guehi potentially set to arrive for more than £60million.

It will be a huge deal if Newcastle United can pull it off, but it might not be the end of Paul Mitchell’s summer transfer activity.

Will Osula is also set to sign for Newcastle from Sheffield United, which means there will be just one priority left to pursue.

Newcastle want a winger

Eddie Howe is also eager to add a right winger to his squad ahead of the new season, but it remains to be seen who Toon officials will look to bring in.

Nico Gonzalez has been linked with Newcastle, with the Fiorentina attacker riding a wave of momentum after his Copa America success with Argentina.

News of interest from the Magpies has been reported in Italy and England, with Gonzalez on Newcastle’s list of targets.

Nico Gonzalez set for talks with Fiorentina

Now the 26-year-old appears to be on course to make a decision about his future, as he returns to Fiorentina after his international exploits.

According to Italian journalist Daniele Longo, Gonzalez is due to hold talks with Fiorentina over whether or not he wants to leave, with the Serie A side valuing him at £30million.

He states that talks will take place in the ‘next few hours’, with Newcastle, Juventus and Atalanta interested if it is decided that Gonzalez and Fiorentina will part ways.

Juventus pose a problem for Newcastle

An opportunity could be about to open up for Newcastle, but they are perhaps not the club that is pursuing the hardest for Gonzalez.

That is based on a report from Italy that shares details of Juventus’ interest in the attacker.

According to Calciomercato, Juventus are now pushing to sign Gonzalez from Fiorentina. They report that Juve boss Thiago Motta thinks he is a better fit for his team compared to other targets.

Calciomercato also state that a meeting is set to take place between Gonzalez and Fiorentina.

With Juventus pushing, this could be another attacking target that Newcastle miss out on. A move to the Serie A giants is likely to be much more appealing, while this could be a difficult deal for Newcastle to do at this moment in time from a financial perspective.

As Newcastle close in on a £60million+ deal for Guehi, it remains to be seen how much the Magpies will have left to spend. It may depend on players leaving, with the likes of Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron linked with exits.

The wait could soon be over to discover whether or not Gonzalez is available. If he is, it might be a case of right player, wrong time for Newcastle United.
