This time last year, Newcastle United were getting over the disappointment of missing out on signing Andrey Santos. Fast forward to January 2024 and the Magpies might suddenly have a second chance to get their man.

In late 2022, Newcastle United looked desperate to sign Andrey Santos from Vasco Da Gama. There was even confidence from Toon officials that a deal for the Brazilian wonderkid was going to be completed.

But that confidence appeared to be misplaced, with Chelsea swooping in to sign the youngster for £18million.

He impressed during the Blues’ pre-season preparations, before securing a loan move to Nottingham Forest. However, that move proved to be a disaster. He barely featured at the City Ground, limited to just two appearances in all competitions so far. His loan deal has now been terminated, while Newcastle remain keen.

It was recently reported that Eddie Howe’s side are once again interested in signing Santos, and now the Chronicle have provided an update on the situation.

Andrey Santos’ agents open to Newcastle switch in January

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have been made aware that they might be able to sign Santos on loan from Chelsea this month.

The Chronicle add that Santos’ representatives would be open to the possibility of their client signing for Newcastle.

However, that would present the Magpies with an issue, as you are only allowed to loan one player from a Premier League club. At this moment in time, Newcastle already have a player on loan from Chelsea in Lewis Hall.

He is set to join the club permanently at the end of the season, but his current arrangement will prevent Newcastle from signing Santos temporarily.

One solution would be to fast track the Hall deal and sign him permanently now, which would then allow Newcastle to sign another player on loan from Chelsea in Santos.

That could be ideal for Newcastle, as the club probably see the 19-year-old as a better midfield addition than Kalvin Phillips – but that is only if the Magpies had the option to sign Santos permanently in the future. If not then there is no point in loaning him, as we should not be developing Chelsea’s players for them.

It is a very complicated situation, but it appears that Santos’ representatives are interested in sending their client to St James’ Park if the possibility arises.
