Newcastle are now showing interest in bringing a midfielder in on loan in January after failing to sign him permanently in the summer.
Newcastle had been tracking Andrey Santos for the last year or so but missed out on signing the Brazilian both in January and the following summer when Chelsea snapped him up.
Journalist Ben Jacobs is now claiming that Newcastle still admire the 19-year-old and will be looking to take him on loan this month after his disappointing spell at Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle need a new midfielder in January
Kalvin Phillips has been the main target for some time now as Newcastle look to sure up their defence by adding a more defensively minded midfielder to their ranks.
However, Santos could prove to be an alternative option as other teams both in the Premier League and in Europe continue to monitor Phillips’ situation at Manchester City.
The midfielder has been struggling to work his way into the team at Forest where he has featured just twice across all competitions and played just seven minutes of top-flight football in total.
Chelsea are keen on getting their young star playing more regular football and could view Newcastle as the ideal team for him to develop his talents having seen the likes of Joelinton and Joe Willock excel in that area.

Santos would get crucial minutes at Newcastle
Although Eddie Howe will be hoping to get his players back to full fitness, Newcastle have been without several key midfielders so far this season and are still without Willock and Sandro Tonali currently.
That would give a perfect opportunity to a new signing, like Santos, who would effectively have to play key minutes in the league as Newcastle hope to fight their way back up the table.
Having admired the ‘impressive‘ Brazilian youth international for some time, it’s practically a guarantee that the Chelsea man would be an important member of the team unlike his current situation at Forest.
The biggest issue presented with signing Santos, however, would be the fact that Lewis Hall is already on loan from Chelsea and the Premier League rules state that you may only loan one player from one club at a time.
