Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer knew a thing or two about scoring goals.
To this day, he is still Newcastle United’s all-time leading goalscorer, boasting an obscene tally of 206 goals in black and white. He claimed that record in 2006, with his 201st Newcastle United goal putting him ahead of Jackie Milburn.
Alan Shearer is also the Premier League’s record scorer, hitting the back of the net 260 times for the Magpies, Blackburn Rovers and Southampton.
He scored all kinds of goals. Right foot, left foot, headers, volleys, screamers, tap-ins. You name them, the Newcastle United legend scored them.

Alan Shearer thinks Newcastle volley vs Everton is his best goal
When it comes to his best goal, there are some exceptional options. A side-footed volley for Newcastle against Aston Villa was truly stunning, while his record-breaking strike against Portsmouth will live forever even if it was not his most aesthetically pleasing.
However, during an interview with the Premier League’s YouTube channel in April 2024, Shearer admitted that a volley against Everton in December 2002 is his best ever goal.
“I think the Everton goal, I know people have their own opinions, but I think the Everton goal for me would maybe be my best goal,” he said.
“I just caught it so sweet. I knew, with the dip on it, as soon as I hit the connection with it that it that it was going in the back of the net.
“I’ve said it before, I think that Everton goal was probably my best technique-wise. I’m going to say the Everton one.”
Alan Shearer combined with Newcastle United cult hero to score his best goal
As Shearer says, he caught the volley so sweet. It is a ridiculous goal, and should be remembered as one of the greatest in Premier League history.
It is a proper old school strike, with Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle side quickly moving the ball up the pitch as directly as possible.
Laurent Robert launched a high pass towards Shearer’s strike partner Shola Ameobi, who held off an Everton defender to perfectly head the ball into the path of the Toon captain. Shearer did the rest, thundering an unstoppable volley beyond a helpless Richard Wright in front of the Gallowgate.
Ameobi will argue it was all about the assist, as he virtually put it on a plate for Shearer! He couldn’t miss!
The goal kicked off a late comeback for the Magpies, who were losing 1-0 to the 10-men of Everton before Shearer changed the mood inside St James’ Park.
That goal came in the 86th minute. By the 89th, Newcastle were ahead. An own goal from Li Tie completed the comeback, meaning that Shearer’s best goal of his career was not in vain.
