Paul Mitchell was at Molineux to witness Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday.
The Magpies came from behind to win against Wolves, as the football finally took centre stage once more after a period of behind the scenes drama at Newcastle United.
The fallout from the summer transfer window has continued, with Paul Mitchell causing ructions at St James’ Park by conducting an interview. While it was great to get some transparency and hear from someone other than Eddie Howe, Mitchell did more bad than good.
He appeared to go into self preservation mode, with Mitchell not taking ownership for Newcastle’s transfer failings. He was also critical of the Magpies’ previous transfer model, which upset the likes of Amanda Staveley.
And it probably upset the manager too, with Eddie Howe defending the signings he has made since joining Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe works his magic as Newcastle beat Wolves
One of those signings stepped up on Sunday, as Harvey Barnes scored an incredible winner to hand Newcastle United all three points against Wolves.
It was a huge win for the Magpies, who preserved their unbeaten start to the season.
And it was a big victory for Eddie Howe, whose in-game decisions played a huge part in his side coming from behind to win and go third in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s incredible record since joining Newcastle United
Newcastle United winning a Premier League game – a familiar feeling since Eddie Howe became manager.
He has worked wonders at St James’ Park, and continues to prove why he is absolutely the right man for the job – even if outsiders are desperate for him to be moved on for a fancier name.
In fact, a graphic from Sky Sports sums up what a special job Howe has done since his arrival on Tyneside.
Since his appointment, Newcastle United have picked up 185 points. 71 of them came in the 2022/23 season, when the Magpies qualified for the Champions League.
In comparison to the rest of the Premier League, only three clubs have picked up more points than Newcastle since Howe was appointed as Steve Bruce’s successor. Those three clubs are Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Paul Mitchell must be careful not to lose Howe
That points tally compared to Newcastle’s Premier League rivals sums up why Mitchell is playing an incredibly dangerous game.
While talk of a ‘civil war’ inside St James’ Park might be slightly over the top, it has been an uncomfortable start to Howe and Mitchell’s relationship on Tyneside. And to make matters worse, it has come at a time when Howe could be lured away by the England job.
Obviously Mitchell wants to put his own stamp on things, and the recruitment policy is going to change following his arrival. But the comments he recently made were incredibly foolish, and risked upsetting the most important person at the club.
Newcastle United’s success since the takeover is down to the work of Eddie Howe. He has united the club and got every ounce of talent out of the players at his disposal. And he is the man to continue taking Newcastle United on this journey.
Mitchell must not jeopardise that and needs to support Howe, rather than rile him up. Otherwise, this could all end in tears.
