Three former players Newcastle could re-sign in January

Newcastle are set to embark on their first transfer window since the takeover, looking to build a squad capable of avoiding the drop.

Some former players could be on their radar, and that would be quite a neat bridge between the Mike Ashley era and the new dawn.

Here is a look at three former Magpies Newcastle could look to bring back when the January transfer market gets underway, with honourable mentions to Ivan Toney and Alexandar Mitrovic, who we have left out because of Callum Wilson and the fact they would cost a huge amount at a time when issues in other parts of the team need sorting.

Gini Wijnaldum

Wijnaldum has been linked with a return to St James’ Park with his switch to Paris Saint-Germain yet to get off the ground.

He is a Premier League and Champions League winner with great experience and energy who could beef up the central midfield area for Eddie Howe.

He has gone on to achieve a hell of a lot since he left Newcastle but perhaps some fans are still upset about the manner of his departure.

Ayoze Perez

Perez’s guile and work ethic would give Newcastle a boost at a crucial stage of the season and he is not a nailed on fixture in the Leicester team at present.

Howe has a reputation for getting plenty out of creative players and Perez would give him options in a variety of forward areas.

Wilson could do with someone to ease the goalscoring burden and getting Perez back could be a way to do that without spending big on another centre forward who may not play every week.

James Tavernier

Newcastle need to bolster their defence by the end of the window; there is no getting away from that.

Tavernier has established himself as someone in Scotland with Rangers who can deal with the demands of playing for a big club, and he also has a fantastic set-piece delivery.

Kieran Trippier may well be coming to Newcastle, but if does not arrive, Tavernier looks like an achievable alternative in the same mould.
