Targett purchase clause shows Newcastle are not being pushed around by PL rivals

There was a report in November that Premier League clubs were not going to sell to Newcastle United in January.

That was in the wake of the takeover and there was talk of an ‘anyone but Newcastle’ approach from the top flight clubs.

It might have been feared that Newcastle’s new transfer team would not have the nous to get around that.

But Newcastle managed to get Dan Burn out of Brighton eventually, and loaned in Matt Targett to bolster their backline from Aston Villa.

It has recently been reported that they have a £15 million purchase option to buy Targett in the summer.

And we have already written that they should focus on tying down the Englishman when the window re-opens, at an affordable price.

And that shows that Newcastle will be pushed around by their divisional rivals and can engineer affordable, common sense deals with Premier League clubs.

That means the report from November was premature and its fears have been unfounded.

There will be more of the same needed in the summer, with Newcastle now trying to build a squad which can push into at least mid table in Eddie Howe’s first season in charge.
