Newcastle United fans may have big hopes for the January transfer window, but they may have to temper those expectations.
There are just three weeks until the window opens and clubs can start spending again. Whether Newcastle United actually will or not remains to be seen, though.
Prem proven or future prospects? What do you want from Newcastle in the transfer market…
Newcastle United will look abroad for young talent – but is it the right move?
With Newcastle always playing close to the limits of PSR, the idea of big money transfers has always been unlikely for the Magpies. There is thought to be more financial headroom right now, but it might not make a difference next month.
It is thought Ross Wilson will look abroad for young talent who can develop in the future for Newcastle rather than splashing out. That might not be ideal in the short-term, but it is the best strategy.

Newcastle want young talent and it’s worth the risk
For Newcastle fans, potential signings like Elliot Anderson and James Trafford are at the top of their wishlist. However, we are more likely to see unknown entities coming to Tyneside. They will be cheaper, and may take more time to develop, but it’ll all be worth it.
Just this week, we’ve seen Alex Toth linked to Newcastle, while Kevin Danois has emerged as an alternative to Kees Smit.
Even Smit, who is just 19-years-old, is thought to be too expensive for Newcastle, with a price tag set at around £53m.
But let’s not forget, expensive doesn’t always mean better. You only have to look at Alexander Isak at Liverpool (or indeed Florian Wirtz) to see that spending big money never guarantees success, at least not immediately.
It’s said Newcastle are copying Chelsea’s strategy of looking overseas to get the jump on their rivals and find the next top talents. When you look at Estevao, it’s clear that method can be a success.

Will Ross Wilson stick to his guns in January?
Now, the big thing we can’t wait to find out is whether Wilson will stick to the plan or buckle under the pressure of looking for short-term wins.
The noise from fans can be overwhelming at times, and with this being Wilson’s first transfer window at the club, there’s always a chance he will want to make some kind of statement to get the supporters on side.
Who is the one player you wish Newcastle United signed in the summer?
We missed out on a lot, but I'm not upset we didn't sign Strand Larsen in the end!
That said, fans are pleased with Wilson’s ideas of looking abroad. It’s all about just landing the right targets rather than signing someone for the sake of it.
Whether a new signing hits the ground running or evolves into a top player in time doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Transfer fees shouldn’t matter to supporters, either. All they want to see is a player that matches their ambitions and makes the squad stronger, be it in the short-term or long-term.
