The Magpies need to sign at least a couple of players in January, so here’s a look at the latest rumours and reports in our Newcastle United transfer round-up.

Newcastle United are back in form and after Saturday’s win over Burnley, it’s now four games unbeaten for Eddie Howe and co.

Pretend you’re Newcastle United’s sporting director, where are you spending straight away?

Ross Wilson has given the green light to January signings at Newcastle United…

However, there’s work to be done in the new year, with a full-back and midfielder on Howe’s shopping list. Whether he gets them or not is another matter.

For more on that situation, plus the latest on James Trafford and potential outgoings on Tyneside, dive into our Newcastle transfer round-up for the weekend’s biggest stories.

James Trafford might not be for sale

Newcastle fans want a new goalkeeper signing and James Trafford has been linked with Newcastle for months now. You’d think it was a no-brainer that he would end up at St. James’ Park in January, then.

However, there are now doubts over Trafford’s availability. Newcastle are thought to be less interested than first thought, and Man City don’t necessarily want to let him go.

It’s thought Trafford would be too expensive for Newcastle anyway. Plus, there’s also the fact that Newcastle are being stubborn over Tino Livramento, which has frustrated City and made them less inclined to sell to the Magpies.

What is Ross Wilson up to?

Just how active Newcastle are in January may well come down to how Ross Wilson operates over the next few weeks.

The good news is, Wilson has told Eddie Howe his plans. Fans are happy with that, too, as he’s made it clear he wants to sign talent from abroad.

However, the Newcastle rumour mill is relatively quiet. Very few concrete names have been linked with the Magpies, but that might not be a bad thing, per se. Maybe Wilson is simply keeping his cards close to his chest.

Meanwhile, one positive sign is the fact that Wilson is very close with the squad at Newcastle, which suggests he is tuned into what the squad is lacking and where he can help them move forward.

Joe Willock and Will Osula could be sold

Their names have been mentioned a fair bit already, but it now looks increasingly likely that Joe Willock and Will Osula will be sold. Newcastle may see them as ideal candidates to recoup some headroom in terms of PSR next month.

How would you actually feel if Newcastle United DIDN’T sign a player in January?!

It would cause a lot of talk on social media…

Willock is wanted by Crystal Palace, while Osula could head off to Germany with Frankfurt keen. However, the fact that Willock has played more recently could complicate matters as neither the player nor the club are particularly pushing for an exit.

On a final plus note, though, we did gather some alternate options for Newcastle in central midfield, now that Kees Smit is off the table. Hopefully, Wilson and his recruitment team listen!
