Premier League highlight exactly where Newcastle are struggling this season

Newcastle United have enjoyed a decent start to the 2023/24 season. It could be going better, but it also could be going a lot worse.

Eddie Howe’s side are experiencing new challenges this season, as they deal with the rigours of competing in Europe. On top of that, they are going on a cup run.

But Newcastle are fighting on all fronts. They are seventh in the Premier League, and into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup. The Champions League is looking less positive, but the Magpies at least still have a chance as they head into their final games against Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.

Newcastle’s priority will be the league, as they want to qualify for Europe again next season. Ideally, they will make it back-to-back seasons in the Champions League.

But to do that, Howe really needs to find a way of improving his side’s away form.

Newcastle struggling for Premier League points away from home this season

The Premier League have released a graphic comparing each club’s home form to their away form.

Newcastle are the fifth best home team in the premier League this season, picking up 15 points from their games at St James’ Park. We continue to be excellent at home, with St James’ Park becoming a real fortress under Eddie Howe.

However, it is a different story on the road. Newcastle have only won five points from their away games so far this season, which leaves them in 15th. Only Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United have a worse record away from home.

The Magpies have won just once in the league away from St James’ Park. That was the 8-0 drubbing of Sheffield United. Then they have picked up points against West Ham United and Wolves. They could be valuable points, but they were both games where Howe’s side surrendered a lead.

For all we are tough to stop at St James’ Park, it is a different story away from home.

The Champions League has played a part in that, with all four of Newcastle’s UCL group games being followed by an away day in the Premier League. It is extremely difficult to go from a European night to an away fixture, which Newcastle are discovering.

We can always rely on our home form, but if we are going to have another special season in the Premier League then Eddie Howe needs to figure out what is going wrong when his side aren’t playing at St James’ Park.
