Newcastle United can still have high hopes for their Champions League campaign despite defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
Things are looking somewhat bleak for Newcastle after falling to successive defeat in this years Champions League tournament which has seen them drop to fourth in Group F.
TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy, however, has faith in Eddie Howe and believes that Toon fans can still get excited about their European future this season.
Jason Cundy makes positive prediction for Newcastle’s Champions League hopes
Newcastle’s performance against Dortmund wasn’t disastrous, the players that were fit just looked tired and out of ideas by the end of the game. They have endured a hectic schedule already but with the team still fighting on four fronts, the fixture list won’t be slowing down any time soon.
Newcastle have already proven that they can compete with the very best after a dominant performance against PSG and holding AC Milan to a goalless draw at the San Siro.
They may have some players unavailable but the quality of the remaining squad and Eddie Howe’s system can still keep Newcastle in this competition.
After the game, Jason Cundy said, “I still think Newcastle can go through. I think Newcastle are good enough to go to PSG and beat Milan at home.
“I honestly don’t see any reason why they can’t go to Paris and win.
“They’ll have to be more aggressive than they were tonight. Eddie Howe’s gone there looking to contain and it’s a tough place to go.
“It would not be a disaster if they dropped into the Europa League, but right now where they are with the luck of the draw who knows what you can do.”
Newcastle can get at PSG and Milan
It’s going to be a very tough ask for Newcastle to qualify given the position they’re currently in, but PSG will fear Newcastle after what they endured at St James’ Park just over a month ago.
The same can also be said for AC Milan who will be travelling to the North East for the final fixture of the group and heading into what will could be a similar intense atmosphere to the one we saw against the French champions.
In the last couple of years, Carabao Cup final aside, Newcastle have performed at their very best when they have been underestimated and their backs have been against the wall.
Eddie Howe and his men have proven time and time again that they thrive on people believing that they’re just happy to be there to make up the numbers.
The worst thing PSG and Milan can do at this point is see Newcastle as an easy fixture. Howe will no doubt be telling his squad that people have already claimed them to be down and out to bring the best out of them for these final two games.
