Our View – Newcastle never stood a chance of signing Gilmour once Norwich got involved

Norwich have signed Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on a season-long loan.

Newcastle were linked with the Scotland international before he made the move to Carrow Road.

It might disappoint some fans that Newcastle have missed out on a signing to a newly-promoted club.

But we’ve picked out two advantages Norwich had over the Magpies in this particular chase.

Farke knows Tuchel

Tuchel and Norwich boss Daniel Farke worked together at Dortmund, when the former was in charge of the first team and the latter was second team boss.

That relationship has likely made all the difference in where Gilmour ended up.

If Tuchel has the choice of sending one of his brightest talents out to a manager he has a great relationship with (Farke) or one he has no relationship (Steve Bruce) it’s a no-brainer from his point of view.

But that’s not the only thing which worked against Newcastle here…

Style of play

Norwich earned plaudits for their style of play last time they were in the top flight.

They try and play football when they get their foot on it, and press when they don’t.

Farke has spoken before about the fact that Tuchel has influenced his methods.

It makes sense for Tuchel to send Gilmour to a club whose style aligns more closely with Chelsea’s.

On the other hand, Steve Bruce’s dour, safety-first approach isn’t the ideal environment for a young footballer to develop in and that likely played a part in Gilmour ending up at a team who have just come up.
