Newcastle United are yet to see the true impact of their summer transfer activity.

It was a very busy summer for the Magpies. Six senior signings arrived at St James’ Park, while Alexander Isak went to Liverpool for a British record fee.

There was also another record deal involving Eddie Howe’s side. Nick Woltemade joined Newcastle United for £69million, becoming the club’s most expensive signing ever.

That deal kicked off a chain of events that resulted in Isak getting his move, while there is excitement on Tyneside surrounding the German striker’s potential.

However, Toon fans have seen during the international break that ‘potential’ is the all-important word when it comes to Woltemade.

Nick Woltemade proves Newcastle United were right to overspend on Yoane Wissa

The 23-year-old started both of Germany’s World Cup qualifiers during the international break. He did not massively impress in either, at a time when Julian Nagelsmann’s side really struggled to showcase what they are capable of.

There was one moment of magic. Woltemade got an assist during the win over Northern Ireland, offering a glimpse of what he is going to offer in black and white.

While Germany have much bigger problems, Woltemade’s performances proved he is not the finished article. He will get there, and the coaching expertise of Eddie Howe should ultimately result in him becoming a superstar striker.

Woltemade will hopefully achieve his potential, but the presence of Yoane Wissa at St James’ Park has become all the more important.

Newcastle overspent on Wissa, paying Brentford £55million. It was Howe’s decision to pay over the odds, with the Newcastle United manager under no illusions regarding his striker situation.

The Magpies could not just rely on Woltemade. They needed a proven talent, which is why they rolled the dice on Wissa.

Spending that much money on him was a gamble, but it is one that already feels set to pay off.

Who will start for Newcastle United against Wolves?

Newcastle United return to Premier League action on Saturday, as they prepare to face Wolves at St James’ Park.

Toon fans will be desperate to see Wissa and Woltemade in action, as they get set for their debuts.

While Woltemade has the most excitement surrounding him, it feels inevitable that Wissa will start on 13th September.

He is a ‘plug-in-and-play’ player. He is Premier League proven, ready to have an instant impact on Tyneside.

In contrast, Howe will take his time with Woltemade. He will work with him at the Newcastle United training ground, before easing him into his side. It is something he regularly does with new signings who have arrived from outside the Premier League.

Signing Wissa affords Howe that opportunity, reinforcing why Newcastle were right to spend so much money on him.
