Newcastle United’s summer transfer window has brought an unexpected problem for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United invested in major summer signings, but Eddie Howe’s new recruits have experienced mixed fortunes.

The Magpies were beaten at West Ham United on Sunday afternoon in another dreadful away showing.

Eddie Howe wanted Newcastle to solve the recent away day woes, but he witnessed another poor performance.

Jacob Murphy’s opener should have set Newcastle on a path to victory, but two soft goals handed West Ham the lead.

Tomas Soucek added a late third to seal West Ham’s win as Newcastle ended the game looking disjointed.

Newcastle United’s Premier League signings yet to shine

Howe must find an answer to these struggles, but also needs to solve issues around his summer signings.

Newcastle went with a blend of Premier League experience and foreign imports as Howe bolstered his squad.

The two foreign arrivals have excelled, with Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade arguably emerging as Newcastle’s top performers this season.

Thiaw and Woltemade have adapted in rapid fashion, even though the striker was substituted at half-time against West Ham.

Conversely, the proven Premier League players are yet to shine.

Jacob Ramsey has yet to show his quality, while Anthony Elanga has been an enormous disappointment so far.

Elanga arrived in a big-money move from Nottingham Forest but has shown none of the quality that made him a star at the City Ground.

Ramsey’s role is a little confusing as well; is he a midfielder? A winger? A number 10? That is something Howe must also solve.

It’s usually the case that proven Premier League players slot straight in and imports take a little longer to settle.

Newcastle are experiencing the complete opposite, and Howe surely can’t have expected those Premier League additions to make such slow starts.

Until Howe can find an answer, Newcastle may struggle to find consistent results.

Newcastle waiting on Yoane Wissa

Newcastle also snapped up Aaron Ramsdale on loan, bringing in the goalkeeper as competition for Nick Pope.

Ramsdale impressed against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, but has yet to start a Premier League game.

Yoane Wissa hasn’t made his Premier League debut for Newcastle either, more than two months on from his deadline day arrival.

Wissa remains on the sidelines through injury, and may yet head to the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo.

The former Brentford star should make a big impact when fit, but he is another example of Newcastle’s ‘proven’ Premier League recruitment not quite paying off just yet.
