Newcastle United’s away struggles continued in the Premier League this season with a frankly pathetic performance away at West Ham in a 3-1 defeat.
Jacob Murphy gave Newcastle United the lead 26 seconds after Jarrod Bowen hit the post and Eddie Howe’s side looked set for another fine day at the London Stadium.
Newcastle, however, were dreadful after that. They were living very dangerously in a typically flat away performance even before Lucas Paqueta got the hosts back into it with a strike from range.
Sven Botman then put through his own net and Tomas Soucek scored late on to give West Ham all three points. Newcastle remain winless in the Premier League this season.
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players.

Nick Pope – 6/10
As ever, Pope produced some good saves. Still, he could have done better for the first goal and was lucky a punch out from a cross didn’t lead to more even before Paqueta scored.
Didn’t cover himself in glory for the third goal, either.
Emil Krafth – 5/10
Only starting due to Kieran Trippier’s illness and is some way below both the England stalwart and Tino Livramento.
Harsh to criticise perhaps given he’s third-choice at best but looked way off it on Sunday and it was no surprise he was replaced at half-time.
Sven Botman – 6/10
Unlucky for the own goal but he was poor against Fulham last weekend and that continued here. Taken off for Harvey Barnes.
Malick Thiaw – 7/10
Brilliant tackle which initially looked like a penalty. Has surpassed Botman as Newcastle’s best defender in recent weeks.
Not everything worked for him but Thiaw was a relative standout compared to some of his teammates.
Dan Burn – 6/10
Did reasonably well but Lewis Hall’s full-time return cannot come quickly enough. Hasn’t looked comfortable at left-back this season and while that’s not really his fault, it is a slight weakness.
Sandro Tonali – 7/10
The best of a bad bunch in midfield, but that isn’t saying an awful lot. Delivery from corners dreadful, however, and that was against a team who have struggled to defend them all season.
Bruno Guimaraes – 5/10
Surely one of his worst games to date. Lost the battle with good friend Lucas Paqueta and unusually flat. Got played around by Freddie Potts and Mateus Fernandes.

Joelinton – 5/10
Forced a save out of Alphonse Areola during the first-half but that feels like his most important contribution to date in the Premier League this season.
An otherwise anonymous performance and they are getting more frequent. Joelinton‘s form is a concern and he was lucky to have survived the half-time cull. Should have been replaced.
Jacob Murphy – 6/10
Did brilliantly for the goal but otherwise very poor. He wasn’t alone in that but the fact he failed to build on the ruthless finish was hugely disappointing.
Nick Woltemade – 5/10
Unable to get in the game. Callum Wilson’s performance for the Hammers should give the towering German food for thought.
Woltemade showed some nice touches but didn’t hold the ball up anywhere near as well as the former Toon forward. Taken off at half-time, following his most difficult game yet.
Anthony Gordon – 5/10
Anthony Gordon was busy, without actually doing much. Hugely frustrating to watch him play so well in the Champions League, only to flatter to deceive in the Premier League. Subbed at the break and that felt like a message.
Subs:
William Osula 5/10
Offered a threat in behind but more in theory than practice.
Jacob Ramsey 6/10
Brought a touch more energy but couldn’t do much to influence the game.
Fabian Schar 6/10
Has got to stop trying to shoot from range. Yes, he’s scored a few but the chances of it happening again are so slim. Otherwise fine, without being excellent.
Harvey Barnes 5/10
Did next to nothing for most of his outing but went close late on.
Anthony Elanga 5/10
Like Barnes, he failed to contribute much.
