Newcastle United must not sign Lyndon Dykes from QPR – opinion

Newcastle United desperately need to sign a striker, but not so desperately that they should get Lyndon Dykes.

According to TEAMtalk, the Magpies have been watching the Queens Park Rangers forward in recent weeks.

The report names multiple clubs interested in Dykes, although Newcastle’s stance is unclear. While they claim Eddie Howe’s side want the 26-year-old in their headline, the specific section about the Magpies merely states we’ve been watching him.

But regardless, Dykes is a player who Newcastle absolutely must not sign this month.

Lyndon Dykes is not good enough for Newcastle

It’s obvious Newcastle need a striker in January. We’ve always needed better backup for Callum Wilson, and now we need someone to replace him given his eight-week injury layoff.

The Magpies were embarrassed on Saturday, losing 1-0 to League One side Cambridge United. Perhaps the result would have been different if we actually had a striker on the pitch.

It is now being reported that the owners desperately want to sign a striker before our next game against Watford on Saturday. But that doesn’t mean we should settle for someone like Dykes.

The Scotland international currently has six league goals for QPR, and hasn’t found the net in the Championship since late October.

His scoring record is far from exceptional, only managing double figures in the league once in his career.

The Australian born forward has been impressive for Scotland, and was involved at last summer’s European Championships.

He’s certainly a handful up top and his work ethic cannot be disputed. However, he just doesn’t have the goalscoring touch required.

Newcastle are in a precarious position, which is why Eddie Howe is keen to bring in Premier League experience.

Dykes has none of that, and his record in weaker divisions isn’t enough to suggest he’d thrive in the top flight.

Newcastle probably aren’t considering a move for him. But if they are – think again lads.
