Keith Downie of Sky Sports has reported that Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick is valued at £50 million. The Czech striker impressed at last summer’s Euros, netting 5 times – the same number as Cristiano Ronaldo.

The forward’s outstanding showing last summer caught the eye of a Newcastle legend. The Magpies’ all-time top scorer Alan Shearer described his goal against Scotland as ‘genius.’

The 6’3 striker has been linked with Newcastle before, even during the Mike Ashley era. The Daily Mail reported in August 2020 that Newcastle wanted to sign the 25-year-old Czech Republic international striker.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham have interest in Schick, according to the MailOnline.

A hefty fee that Newcastle should pay

To attract any top player, clubs will often have to spend more than they would like to. The Magpies are already targeting Lille defender Sven Botman, who will cost around £45m, according to the latest Northern Echo report.

With other positions such as left-back, midfield and another striker being explored, Newcastle need to be careful they don’t breach financial fair play.

However, Schick would be a very exciting arrival on Tyneside. The Czech Republic international has 17 goals from 15 appearances this season. In his last season at Leverkusen, he accumulated 9 goals.

With a tall frame and an eye for goal, Schick could provide the goals Newcastle need to stay up. The only risk is he has no Premier League experience.

But with injuries up-front and teams aware of the newly acquired riches, taking a chance on someone like Schick is what Newcastle need to do.

Schick is definitely not the be-all and end-all for Newcastle. The club has many strikers on their radar this January window. If it means risking financial problems to bring the Czech striker in, the Toon Army should look elsewhere.

But, if they can find a way to splash the cash on him and not break the bank, he’s worth perusing. There’s still a way to go in the transfer window, hopefully, Newcastle can land a striker sooner rather than later.
