Newcastle should make fresh move for Wolves’ Max Kilman this summer

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United tried to sign Max Kilman from Wolves during the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe was desperate for defensive reinforcements at the start of the year, as he looked to tighten a backline that was one of the leakiest in the Premier League.

The Magpies were linked with big money moves for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos, but failed to negotiate fees with Lille and Sevilla.

In the end, Newcastle turned to Dan Burn, signing the local lad on deadline day for £13million. It’s proven to be an excellent deal, with Burn excelling at St James’ Park.

But the former Brighton man was one of multiple defenders linked with Newcastle. There was an endless list of centre-backs targeted by the Toon, such was their desperation.

And the Athletic claim that Newcastle asked Wolves about singing two of their defenders. The first was Conor Coady, which was reported in the media at the time. And the second is a new name, Max Kilman.

Of course, both moves were rebuffed. However, we should certainly revisit a bid for Kilman.

Despite Burn’s excellent form and Fabian Schar’s resurgence, we are still reportedly looking to sign another centre-back this summer.

Just like in January, plenty of names have been linked.

Kilman hasn’t been mentioned, but he is certainly an option Howe and co should explore. They clearly know all about him, otherwise they wouldn’t have looked to sign him in January.

The 24-year-old has had an excellent season with Wolves, establishing himself as a starter at Molineux and guiding them to what will likely be a top half finish.

His form could eventually earn him an England callup, while he’s also been linked with a move to Chelsea.

But Newcastle could be a good fit for the defender. He’s incredibly impressive in possession, which is why he’s been able to establish himself at Wolves. And that’s what Howe wants from his defenders too.

Kilman is a player who can still get better, but has already proven he can perform in the top flight. The only question mark would be whether or not he can play in a back four, having spent his time at Wolves in a back five.

Newcastle are going to be linked with plenty of big names, so perhaps a move for the 6ft 4in defender wouldn’t grab many headlines. But he could be a smart addition, and the Toon should definitely consider a fresh move.
