Fabian Schar was on the scoresheet as Newcastle United beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1. The Swiss international netted the Magpies’ second goal just 14 minutes in.
Not only was Schar in and amongst the goals last weekend, but he was also a top performer. He’s established a strong partnership alongside January signing Dan Burn. The two have kept captain Jamaal Lascelles out of the side. He missed the Aston Villa clash due to illness and hasn’t found a way back in.
He’s out of contract very soon but the Telegraph has reported that both he and Jonjo Shelvey are set to sign new deals. Boss Eddie Howe has spoken well of him previously so it’s not much of a surprise.
Schar’s performance is backed up by the numbers
The 30-year-old did his duty defensively against the Seagulls. He made 6 clearances, 3 interceptions and won 100% of his ground duels (Sofascore).
It’s been quite the transformation for Schar since Howe’s arrival. Initially, he hit the ground running when he arrived under Rafa Benitez. He signed from Deportivo after his £3 million clause was activated (BBC Sport).
He established himself as a regular starter for Benitez, his screamer against Burnley stands out in the minds of some fans. But the arrival of Steve Bruce saw his form dip drastically.
Over time Schar fell out of favour and struggled to make the starting XI. But now alongside Dan Burn, he’s worked his way back into the side.
The Newcastle boss had admired Schar from afar before he got the Toon job in November. With his ability on the ball, it’s understandable why a manager like Howe would rate him so much.
Some fans will be delighted if Schar gets a new deal for Newcastle. The shift he put in last weekend has certainly proved that he has earned a new contract.
