Newcastle now look to be in serious danger of failing to deliver Eddie Howe’s transfer wish

Newcastle United have a matter of days now to tie up any loose ends in the summer transfer window with the deadline on Friday night.

For the Magpies, this summer has been nothing short of a huge disappointment with Newcastle having massively underwhelmed in the market.

So far, Newcastle have done minimal work in the market when it comes to player arrivals with Lloyd Kelly’s free transfer the highlight of the business done.

The Toon have now entered the new campaign with an arguably weaker squad to what they had coming out of the 2023/24 term.

With Elliot Anderson and Yankuba having been sold to balance the books against PSR, Eddie Howe cannot be pleased going into the game on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur.

As the clock ticks down on this summer’s window, Howe has now provided a very blunt message on what lies ahead for Newcastle in the market.

Eddie Howe shares latest update on Newcastle’s transfer activity

It is now nearing the final 72 hours of this summer’s transfer window and Newcastle fans are still waiting for their club to really make a move.

Newcastle are hopeful of potentially signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this week with numerous bids having been launched.

However, it is not just at centre-back where Newcastle need to add with Howe having hoped to see a new right-winger signed this summer.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning ahead of the Carabao Cup game against Nottingham Forest, Howe was asked whether a centre-back and right-winger could be signed.

And the response was not one which will provide the Toon fans with much confidence to the listening on.

“Probably not, no,” Howe very simply replied.

The bluntness of the response is telling of the frustrations which the Newcastle boss must be feeling having failed to have been backed so far this summer with just days to go.

Eddie Howe demanded to be backed amid England job rumours

Following Gareth Southgate’s exit, Howe has been one of the main men linked with the England job as his successor.

But, Howe did come out and squash the rumours fairly quickly with the Newcastle boss admitting he was happy on Tyneside as long as he was being backed by the owners.

“My commitment is unwavering and has been since the day I came to the football club. As long as I have certain things for me,” he told Keith Downie earlier this summer.

“As in, I’m happy and I’m allowed to work in the way that I feel I need to work to get the best out of me, and that I feel supported. Then that will never change.”

And it would be fair to say that Newcastle’s lack of transfer activity this summer would be anything but backing their manager.

Even a late move for Guehi would come as a muted win for Newcastle given the struggles to get deals over the line which they have endured.

Considering there have been two significant sales to Newcastle’s exciting youth products, it has hardly been a summer of growth on Tyneside.
