Newcastle finally have the chance to get revenge on Man United after what they did in 2022

It is 2024 and it looks like a big deal is going to happen between Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Toon Sporting Director Dan Ashworth appears set to call time on his tenure at St James’ Park, with Manchester United making a move to bring him to Old Trafford.

He is keen on the move, with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe set to get his wish and poach one of Newcastle United’s most important figures behind the scenes.

It looks like the only thing that stands between Ashworth and leaving Newcastle for Man United is compensation.

Man United will have to pay compensation to get Dan Ashworth

Ever since rumours of Ashworth leaving first emerged, it was reported that it would cost Man United a lot of money in compensation.

It has now been claimed that it could cost them more than £6million, while the Telegraph suggest it could even be upwards of £10million.

It may all depend on when Man United want Ashworth to start. They will be eager for him to arrive as soon as possible, but that might not be possible. Ashworth’s Newcastle contract has a 12-month gardening leave clause, and the only way that will not be adhered to is if Man United pay the Magpies what they want.

And the Toon owners should look to get every penny out of Man United after what they did in January 2022.

Chance for Newcastle to get revenge on Man United

January 2022 was the first transfer window after PIF bought Newcastle United. There were multiple changes at St James’ Park, with five new players joining Eddie Howe’s side.

However, one player who did not join was Jesse Lingard. That is despite the fact that the Toon owners were desperate to sign him on loan and he was keen on the move.

It came at a time when he was barely featuring for Man United, and a move away looked like the ideal solution.

However, he was priced out of a move to Tyneside. Man United were willing to do business with Newcastle, but only if they paid major money. They knew the Magpies were desperate given their fight against relegation, while there was also a fear of what Newcastle could eventually become following their Saudi-backed takeover.

That is why Man United demanded that Howe’s side paid Lingard’s wages in full, plus a £2.5million fee. On top of that, they also wanted a £12million bonus if the Magpies went on to survive.

Newcastle did survive, but not with Lingard in the team. He was forced to remain in Manchester and wait for his contract to expire, missing out on the chance to rebuild his career on Tyneside.

Obviously, it was a tough situation for Man United given that his contract was expiring, but the money they demanded was ridiculous.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, and it will all come down to how desperate they are for Ashworth. If you really want him as soon as possible, put your money where your mouth is.
