Since last month’s shocking takeover, Newcastle United have been linked with a ridiculous number of players.

Centre-backs, wingers, holding midfielders, strikers – basically footballer with a pulse has been talked about as a possible option for the Magpies.

While a lot of the rumours are just that, rumours, some have caught more attention than others.

But the strange thing right now is the number of goalkeepers we’re being linked with.

According to the Times, Newcastle are looking at Lazio’s Thomas Strakosha. Reports in Spain have linked us with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s Dean Henderson could allegedly be a target for Eddie Howe’s side.

I’ve got one question in response to these links – why?

Newcastle’s goalkeeper options are sound

The Newcastle squad desperately needs improving in January. There are areas all over the pitch where we need reinforcements.

Whether it’s squad depth or new starters, there are plenty of ways the new Toon owners can improve Howe’s side.

But the one area that doesn’t need to be dabbled with is in between the sticks. Goalkeeper is our strongest position right now, and it has been for a long time.

Sure, we’ve had fitness issues in goal over the past year or so. Martin Dubravka has had multiple problems that have limited his time on the pitch. But on his day, the Slovakian is a top class Premier League goalkeeper.

And in his absence, Karl Darlow has been sensational. The former Nottingham Forest stopper was excellent last season, and almost made it into the England squad.

As far as goalkeeping duos go, that is pretty strong.

And Newcastle have a decent third choice in Freddie Woodman too, who should really be out on loan right now.

The youngster started the season as number one, but didn’t do himself justice. However, he wasn’t helped by a limp defence in front of him.

But Woodman is one for the future, and will have aspirations of being a Newcastle star in years to come.

Newcastle need to make a few signings in January. But the one thing they don’t need is a goalkeeper. While the options they’re being linked with are sensational, we need to focus on other areas first.
