Newcastle United have lost their opening Premier League game of the season 4-2 to West Ham United.

The Magpies went in at half-time 2-1 up, with Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy scoring either side of Aaron Cresswell.

But the Hammers hit back in the second-half to stun the hosts; Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio all netting for the visitors in the space of 13 minutes.

It was a great first-half from Newcastle, who knocked the ball around confidently and created chances.

Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin were both dangerous and it seemed there was at least a point or more in the game for the Magpies.

But West Ham’s comeback flattened the players and therefore the crowd.

Joe Willock, watching on from the stands, was a big miss in midfield.

He was not registered in time for the game, and Newcastle’s lack of urgency on that might well have proven costly.

Freddie Woodman made his Premier League debut for Newcastle, with Martin Dubravka recovering from his foot surgery and Karl Darlow having really struggled with Covid recently.

He may have shipped four goals, but the Englishman had a decent game personally.

He made a fine save from close-range to deny Jarrod Bowen in the first-half.

The 24-year-old was unlucky on the penalty, saving from Antonio before Soucek quickly followed it up.

On social media, many fans did compliment Woodman for his efforts.

Some felt he was very unlucky to ship four goals and a few suggested he was left down by some poor defending:
