Newcastle United and Liverpool have not seen eye-to-eye over the past 12 months, but now the Reds could be opening the door for a marquee arrival at St James’ Park.
The Magpies are set to sign Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, and will turn their attention to attacking reinforcements once that deal is complete.
It appears to be a straight battle between James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai for who the Magpies are going to prioritise, but a deal for the former appears to be favourable at the moment. He will cost about the same money, he will cost less in wages and he is much younger. In that respect, it is a no brainer.
But for Newcastle to sign the ‘special‘ 22-year-old, they will likely have to activate his £60million release clause. The Magpies believe that fee is too much, and are hoping that they can negotiate a cheaper deal with RB Leipzig.
Whether or not that is possible remains to be seen, but there is perhaps suddenly a better chance than there was following developments in Germany.
Leipzig to sign two potential Dominik Szoboszlai replacements
While Newcastle are only interested in players coming out of Leipzig, the Bundesliga club are on the brink of a signing of their own.
They are reportedly set to sign Fabio Carvalho on loan from Liverpool, who is also an attacking midfielder. His presence at the Red Bull club could mean that they are more willing to let Szoboszlai go, giving Newcastle the chance to get their man.
As well as Carvalho, Leipzig have also confirmed a deal to sign Christoph Baumgartner from Hoffenheim. He is also an attacking midfielder.
With Baumgartner confirmed and Carvalho on his way, Leipzig suddenly have a surplus of attacking midfielders, which, if we’re lucky, might mean that they are prepared to let Szoboszlai go.
If that is the case and we are able to sign the Hungary international, we will have to say a special thank you to Liverpool for helping make the deal possible.
