Romano shares Dominik Szoboszlai update that should alarm Newcastle

Newcastle United already believe that Dominik Szoboszlai is too expensive, and his price tag could be due to increase very soon.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in recent months, with Eddie Howe looking to sign a difference-maker in the final third. Szoboszlai ticks that box, but his £60million release clause is proving to be an issue.

The Magpies do not believe he is worth that much and would like to negotiate a cheaper deal, but RB Leipzig are only willing to sell the Hungarian if someone pays the clause in full.

It leaves Newcastle in a tricky situation – a situation that is all the more pressing given reports that James Maddison prefers a move to Spurs.

If that is the case, Howe should turn to Szoboszlai, but he might need to be quick after the latest update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Dominik Szoboszlai release clause due to expire very soon

According to Fabrizio Romano, Szoboszlai’s £60million release clause is only valid until June 30th, despite initial reports suggesting it was valid until July 15th.

That means that Leipzig have the opportunity to increase their asking price for the attacking midfielder very soon. If a club does not activate his release clause this month then they can ask for whatever figure they want from July onwards.

Therefore, Newcastle need to get their ducks in a row during the next 10 days and decide if they are serious about getting Szoboszlai. If they are then now is the time to strike – otherwise he could cost even more than the overpriced fee of £60million.

Of course, he could still go for less after June 30th, but it would be a real surprise to see Leipzig suddenly lower their asking price. It will likely depend on how desperate they are to sell this summer.

But with his release clause due to expire at the end of this month, Newcastle need to make their minds up. And a decision is all the more pressing given the prospect of Maddison snubbing the Magpies in favour of Spurs.
