Kieran Trippier should be Newcastle captain if Jamaal Lascelles is sold - opinion

Newcastle United could reportedly sell captain Jamaal Lascelles this summer.

That’s according to the Sun, who claim the Magpies will ‘listen to offers’ for the defender.

While he’s no longer a starter, it comes as quite a surprise to see him possibly put up for sale. Lascelles is one of Newcastle’s longest serving players, and has spent most of his time at St James’ Park as captain.

He’s guided the club during a difficult period, but could now be sold just as good times appear to be on the horizon.

If he does leave, Eddie Howe will have to name a new Magpies captain. We’ve seen Jonjo Shelvey wear the armband this season, Callum Wilson was skipper at home to Norwich, while Fabian Schar got it away to Everton.

But there is only one man who should be given the captaincy if Lascelles leaves.

If Newcastle need a new captain, it has to be Kieran Trippier

While he’s only been at the club a few months, Kieran Trippier is the number one candidate to replace Lascelles as captain. He’s already a leader within the dressing room despite only signing in January.

Trippier made his debut in the FA Cup defeat to Cambridge, and even then he showed his leadership skills. As a disgruntled Toon team trudged off after an embarrassing defeat, new boy Trippier was the one rallying his teammates telling them to thank the supporters.

The 31-year-old always fronts up to the press in victory and defeat, and continued to support the team home and away even when he was injured. He didn’t have to do that – he could have stayed at home and watched from there. But he did what he could to help the team despite not being able to play.

Shortly after his arrival, Alan Shearer tipped Trippier to captain Newcastle. After the January win over Leeds, Shearer said on Match of the Day: “Everything about his game was superb and for me he is future captain material for Newcastle United.”

The Toon legend’s claim soon became reality, as he donned the armband in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Interestingly, that was the last time Trippier started a game.

He’s played at the highest level for club and country, and leads by example with his performances on the pitch. If Lascelles does leave, Howe has a simple choice in picking his next captain. It has to be Trippier.
