Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has lauded Kieran Trippier for his “absolutely magnificent” performance against Leeds United at Ellland Road.
Eddie Howe’s side picked up crucial three points at Elland Road, thanks to a Jonjo Shelvey free-kick which spilled through the grasp of Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
The 1-0 win moved the Magpies up to 18th in the Premier League table, one point behind Norwich City with a game in hand.
The clean sheet against Marcelo Bielsa’s side was just our second of the season and one man who played an influential role in keeping the Whites at bay was Trippier.

Tasked with keeping Jack Harrison quiet who came into the clash off the back of his hat-trick against West Ham, Kieran Trippier rose to the challenge and dominated the winger.
The England international’s performance drew high praise from Shearer on Match of the Day.
Shearer said: “I thought he was absolutely magnificent against Jack Harrison whose confidence was really high after a hat-trick, but he never gave him a kick.
“His positioning throughout the game was superb both offensively and defensively. Wherever he went – if he got in behind he blocked him, one-v-one it wasn’t a problem. There was no way past him.
“Everything about his game was superb and for me he is future captain material for Newcastle United, I have no doubt he’ll captain Newcastle.
“A very, very clever signing.”

The win against Leeds was Kieran Trippier’s first as a Newcastle player.
No Newcastle player had more touches than PIFs first signing (57). He made three tackles, three interceptions and four clearances, according to WhoScored. He also won six duels (four ground, two aerial).
Kieran Trippier’s performance against Leeds was undoubtedly his best since returning to the Premier League and already after a short period of time, his importance and influence in this Newcastle side looks to be growing.
