‘Incredible’ Newcastle United player is now under real pressure after beating Wolves 2-1

Eddie Howe completely changed his midfield at half time of Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Wolves.

The Magpies began with the same midfield trio that had started every Premier League game, with Bruno Guimaraes joined by Joelinton and Sean Longstaff.

While there was a clamour to see Sandro Tonali in the starting lineup, it was not a surprise to see the Italian on the bench. And he was joined there by Joe Willock, who was back after a thigh injury.

Both players were introduced at half time, taking the place of Joelinton and Sean Longstaff.

They were tactical substitutions by Eddie Howe, with the two starters really failing to impose themselves on the game at Molineux.

The changes helped turn the tide, with Tonali injecting class and composure into the Newcastle midfield. Having proved his fitness, he should be starting regularly from now on ahead of Longstaff.

Joelinton is struggling for Newcastle United

While it looks like Longstaff is going to lose his place in the starting XI, Joelinton’s position in the team is also under threat.

It has been a really disappointing start to the season for the 28-year-old. Joelinton was ‘incredible’ in the win over Southampton, scoring the winner on the opening day. However, that is as good as it has got for the Brazilian.

Joelinton has been nowhere near his usual self, with the £40million man extremely sloppy in possession game after game. Given how badly he was missed last season and how well he did against Southampton, it has been such a shame to see Joelinton struggle so much.

Joe Willock puts Joelinton under pressure after impressive display against Wolves

And his struggles come at a time when Joe Willock is back, and he proved on Sunday why he should be a starter for Eddie Howe.

The 25-year-old returned from a thigh injury, and showcased why it is so important that the Magpies keep him fit.

He was a big miss last season – Willock is a unique midfielder who can do things that other Newcastle players cannot.

That was on display at Molineux, with Willock’s energy, speed and dribbling ability helping turn the tide. He created five chances during the 45 minutes he was on the pitch, one of which was the assist for Harvey Barnes.

Willock was streets ahead of Joelinton with his performance, and will certainly be pushing to be a starter.

For now, Willock might have to settle for cameos off the bench. He is still building up his fitness, and Newcastle will be extra careful to ensure he does not suffer another setback.

That should give Joelinton a chance to redeem himself, but he is very much under pressure as his poor run of form coincides with Willock reminding everyone of his ability.
