Newcastle United started the season with a victory.

While the win over Southampton at St James’ Park on the opening weekend of the Premier League season was not pretty, Newcastle got over the line.

Indeed, it took resolute defensive performances to claim all three points, with Eddie Howe’s task made all the more difficult by a debatable red card shown to Fabian Schar during the first-half.

Howe was full of praise for Bruno Guimaraes and his defensive display, while he also waxed lyrical about Emil Krafth’s performance after he came on to cover for Schar’s absence.

The defending does deserve a lot of praise of course but Newcastle would not have claimed an important three points without Joelinton.

Saints were architects of their own downfall for the Brazilian’s goal of course but it still took quick thinking from Alexander Isak to cross the ball back into the box after Alex McCarthy’s poor pass out from the back.

Joelinton collected and showed composure in front of goal to punish Saints. As much as it was a mistake from the visitors, Newcastle were ruthless.

In fact, it wasn’t just the goal that stood out about Joelinton’s performance.

Alan Shearer was full of praise for the midfielder when speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day.

Alan Shearer thinks Joelinton is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League

Reflecting on another dynamic performance from Brazilian, Shearer was impressed.

“He was just a tower of strength in the midfield. I mean, the turnaround, I said it last season, from this player is just incredible,” he said.

“Look where he comes from to do his defensive shift. I mean, It is remarkable where he goes from, from one end of the pitch to the other to actually come and win this ball.

“Everything about him is class, quality. He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League now. He is a giant of a midfielder. He never shies from wanting the ball, even in difficult positions.”

How well did Joelinton play for Newcastle against Southampton?

Even aside from the goal, Joelinton stood out.

As per WhoScored data, the 28-year-old produced a team-high number of shots (2), shots on target (1) and fouls drawn (6).

From a defensive perspective, Joelinton ranked within the top five players for Newcastle for tackles (1), interceptions (1), clearances (6) and blocks (2).

An absolute driving force in the middle of the park and a difference-maker on the day, it was a statement performance on the opening weekend.
