Newcastle United were interested in signing Harvey Elliott over the summer, but he finds himself in a tricky spot at Aston Villa.
Alexander Isak moved to Liverpool on transfer deadline day, bringing an end to a sorry transfer saga.
Isak has failed to impress for Liverpool, but Nick Woltemade is thriving as the Swede’s replacement at Newcastle.
It’s actually easy to forget that Newcastle were eyeing a potential signing from Liverpool as Isak speculation swirled.

Harvey Elliott struggling at Aston Villa after Newcastle United interest
Newcastle were interested in Harvey Elliott as his time at Anfield appeared to be coming to an end.
Eddie Howe was keen to add an attack-minded English midfielder to his Newcastle squad and snapped up Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa instead of Elliott.
That paved the way for Villa to sign Elliott on loan, though Alan Shearer was surprised that Newcastle didn’t make a move.
Elliott would have been an exciting addition on paper, but his start to life at Villa Park has been disappointing.
Elliott has played just 97 minutes of Premier League action and only 71 minutes across League Cup and Europa League games.
The 22-year-old has only managed five appearances in a Villa shirt, and he wasn’t even on the bench against Manchester City on Sunday.
Even when Elliott did start for Villa against Fulham in September, he was substituted at half-time.
It’s now almost two months since Elliott joined Villa, and while a period of adjustment was to be expected, this move really isn’t going to plan.
Being in and out of the side would have made some sense, but Elliott isn’t even making the bench.
Elliott seemingly hasn’t impressed Unai Emery just yet, and Newcastle do not appear to be missing out based on the midfielder’s first few weeks at Villa Park.
Newcastle United may yet have another chance to move for Harvey Elliott
With that being said, Elliott is still a creative midfield player with real guile in the final third.
Elliott has plenty of quality in his locker, and he will be desperate to show it at Villa.
There is a chance that Elliott ends up playing his football elsewhere next season despite his recent move to Villa Park.
As reported by Birmingham World, Villa have an obligation to buy Elliott for £35million if he plays 10 games in all competitions.
The fact that Elliott is being left out of the Villa matchday squad raises the question of whether he will hit that 10-game mark.
Elliott has already been left in limbo over his long-term prospects at Villa, as he is battling to convince Emery, even if he does play 10 games.
If he doesn’t, Elliott could be moved elsewhere by Liverpool come the end of the season.
Newcastle may well keep tabs on Elliott’s situation just in case he does become available again, with Eddie Howe no doubt aware of a potential opportunity.
