Dean Henderson could prove Newcastle made a mistake in season opener against Forest

Once upon a time, it looked like Newcastle could start the 2022/23 Premier League season with Dean Henderson in goal.

The Magpies face Nottingham Forest in the opening game of the season, and there’s a chance the 25-year-old could be at St James’ Park.

However, it looks like he’ll be in Steve Cooper’s starting XI instead of Eddie Howe’s.

It was first reported on Wednesday that the Manchester United goalkeeper is a target for Forest. Now it looks like a deal could happen.

Sky Sports report that the Reds are close to agreeing a deal. He would initially join them on club with a view to a £20million permanent move.

It would be a great signing for Forest, who are set to appear in the Premier League for the first time since 1999. Their first top flight test will come against Newcastle, in a game that could hold even more importance for Henderson.

Earlier in the summer, Newcastle were heavily linked with signing Henderson. It was reported that a deal was close and that he was keen on a move to St James’ Park.

However, the Magpies eventually distanced themselves from the stopper, with Dan Ashworth directing the search for a new goalkeeper elsewhere. We’ve since been linked with Burnley’s Nick Pope.

A possible deal for Henderson was certainly exciting, as he could have been a long-term number one at St James’ Park.

But that transfer won’t be happening, and he looks set to head to the City Ground in search of first-team football.

If he does sign, his competitive debut would likely come against Newcastle on August 6th. He’ll have a point to prove, and it would be somewhat ironic if his heroics cost Howe an opening day victory.
