Eddie Howe makes youth call, £40m player returns… Newcastle United predictions for Brighton

Newcastle United are set to face Brighton for a place in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.

The Magpies still have two chances to end their trophy drought this season, as Toon fans look towards the Carabao Cup final on March 16th.

Before then, Newcastle United can continue their progress in the FA Cup.

They have beaten Bromley and Birmingham City so far, and are now set to face Premier League rivals Brighton at St James’ Park.

The Seagulls beat Newcastle earlier this season, and Eddie Howe will be looking for revenge as he eyes a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

A place in the final eight of the competition is up for grabs, and this is Geordie Boot Boys’ predictions for Newcastle United vs Brighton.

Callum Wilson scores his first St James’ Park goal since April 2024

Callum Wilson has only scored one goal for Newcastle United this season. That came in the FA Cup, as Newcastle beat Birmingham City in the fourth round.

The 33-year-old will hope to add to his tally this weekend, and we are backing him to net his first St James’ Park goal since a 5-1 win over Sheffield United in April 2024.

Alexander Isak’s groin issue could result in him missing the game against Brighton, which may mean another chance for Wilson to start.

He will be desperate to regain his sharpness, after looking short of confidence during Newcastle’s loss to Liverpool.

Newcastle United welcome Joelinton back from injury

It has been claimed that Joelinton could return against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

Hopefully that proves to be the case, as Eddie Howe will be eager to give him some minutes ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

The £40million man is predicted to be part of the Newcastle midfield against Brighton, having missed the previous five games with a knee issue.

Joelinton has been a big miss during his injury layoff, so fans will be delighted if he is named in the starting XI.

No Newcastle United youth prospects involved in FA Cup tie

In the previous two rounds of the FA Cup, Howe has given youth a chance.

Trevan Sanusi made his professional debut against Bromley, while Sean Neave was an unused substitute against Birmingham City.

While supporters would love to see more youngsters get an opportunity, that feels unlikely on this occasion.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, we expect Howe to opt against calling up any youth players. The youngest player involved will be Lewis Miley, but the 18-year-old is a first-team regular nowadays despite his tender age.
