Travis Hernes is a young professional footballer who plays for Newcastle United.
Newcastle United have had a lot of success with their academy in years gone by and can point towards the talented Lewis Miley as a recent success story.
However, the Magpies haven’t produced first-team talent consistently for some time and fans are hoping some of the club’s prospects get a chance to shine in pre-season.
Young midfielder Travis Hernes is one such hopeful who has travelled with Eddie Howe’s squad to the first-team training camp in Austria.
There’s a chance he could play in friendlies, starting with Celtic, and maybe even replace Sean Longstaff as he heads to Leeds United.

Who is Travis Hernes?
Travis Enrique Hernes is a young footballer desperate to make an impression at Newcastle.
Starting his career in his native Norway, Hernes first moved to England in 2019 to go on trial at Wolves. He was unsuccessful but was eventually signed by Shrewsbury Town in 2022.
He made six senior appearances for the club during his one-year stint and scored a goal against Wolves U21s in the EFL Trophy.
After his impressive displays, Newcastle swooped in to sign him in 2023 and he has gone on to play at U18, U19 in Europe and U21 levels for the club. He is yet to make his senior competitive debut, but was involved in two matchday squads in 2023-24.
Hernes spent the latter half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Danish side Aalborg but failed to score or assist in 12 appearances. Hernes had to apologise after going on a night out with teammates after a heavy defeat.
How old and tall is Travis Hernes?
Hernes was born in Heradsbygda, Norway, on November 4, 2005. As of July 2025, he is 19 years old.
The teenager, who is of Jamaican descent, still has plenty of time to develop his game and realise his potential.
He is the younger brother of fellow footballer Trace Murray, who plays for Honefoss in Norway.
Hernes stands at 5’10” tall, making him nimble and agile in creative midfield positions.
How much did Newcastle United pay for Travis Hernes?
Newcastle paid a fee to Shrewsbury Town for the signing of Hernes in 2023 but did not disclose the figure, though it’s likely to be a minimal one.
As he was signed and didn’t move clubs following the expiration of his contract, Newcastle did not have to pay compensation for his development.
