Whether Lewis Hall can play for Newcastle against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter final

Newcastle United are into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The game will take place in December, when Eddie Howe will hopefully have some key players back from injury.

The Magpies are currently without Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Elliot Anderson, but they will all hopefully be fit by the time Newcastle take on Chelsea for a place in the semi final of the competition.

That will be a big boost for Howe, who has used the Carabao Cup to give his fringe players minutes. It has allowed Tino Livramento to strut his stuff, and he will look to do that once again when he returns to Stamford Bridge.

However, one Toon player who looks unlikely to feature against Chelsea is Lewis Hall.

Lewis Hall is not allowed to play against Chelsea in Carabao Cup

That is because the 19-year-old is ineligible for the Carabao Cup quarter final contest.

While he is going to become a permanent Newcastle player next summer for £28million, Hall is currently only on loan from Chelsea.

Therefore, Newcastle World state that they have been told by the EFL that Hall will not be eligible to play against his parent club.

However, that could change if Newcastle receive written permission from Chelsea that says they are happy for Hall to be involved in the game and represent the Magpies. But that is extremely unlikely given that it is such a high stakes game.

Big shame for Hall and Newcastle United

That is a huge shame, as the Carabao Cup has been Hall’s main source of minutes so far at Newcastle. He was described as ‘outstanding’ by Sean Longstaff for his performance at Old Trafford, which was just his second ever start for the club.

But Hall played extremely well against Man United, and even got himself a goal. His clever volley doubled the Magpies’ lead in the first half, and he celebrated wildly with an incredibly long knee slide as he skidded across the Old Trafford turf.

Sadly, we won’t see a similar knee slide from Hall at Stamford Bridge next month, as he will have to watch our next Carabao Cup game from the sidelines.
