According to 90 Min, the 27-year-old could make a U-turn on his current plans to try and convince Pep Guardiola to play him more often.

While the former Leeds man is reportedly telling his agents that he believes he can make a success of it at the Etihad Stadium, that situation could soon come to a head.

The report suggests that if his standing under Guardiola has not changed by January, he could look to leave.

For their part, Newcastle are said to be ready to move and would like an initial loan deal.

It’s understandable Phillips would want to make a success of things at City. Having seen Jack Grealish improve after a difficult season, a player who has reached the top level would surely back himself to do something similar.

Still, Newcastle don’t have time to waste.

The January window is notoriously an arduous one and a difficult period from which to extract value for money. With a top four battle on and potentially the latter stages of the Champions League to navigate, the club are not blessed with time to try and convince Phillips.

If he doesn’t want to come, it is surely better to move on to another target.
