Newcastle has been touted as a potential destination for Kalvin Phillips in recent weeks, and there has now been a major development in this saga.
The 27-year-old has hardly featured for Manchester City since his move from Leeds United last year, and in recent weeks he has still not found success under Pep Guardiola despite midfielder Rodri being suspended.
Phillips has been linked with a number of clubs, including Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but Newcastle, who were also interested in the summer, could be set to beat them to his signature.
Newcastle ‘ready to strike’ for Phillips
A report from The Northern Echo has now claimed that, after weeks of reports hinting that Newcastle were uncertain of a move, that Eddie Howe’s side will now be ready to sign Phillips in January.
Phillips originally turned down moves away in the summer as he was keen to fight for his place, but if he changes his mind before the January window, then Newcastle will quickly make a move for the England International.
“In the summer, he opted to remain at the Etihad in order to fight for a place in Pep Guardiola’s side, but his fortunes have not improved and there is a good chance he will finally opt to move on in January,” the report claimed.
“If that happens, Newcastle’s recruitment team will be ready to strike in the hope of setting up either a permanent transfer or an initial loan deal, with a view to a possible permanent move next summer. Phillips joined City for £42m when he left Leeds, signing a six-year deal in Manchester.”
Newcastle’s decision

It seems that Newcastle have now decided that despite Phillips’ injury issues and lack of form, he is a player who they feel can strengthen the squad in January.
If Newcastle can secure a loan move, with a view to a permanent deal, this could be ideal given the financial fair play issues they faced in the summer, and it would also reduce the risks of an expensive permanent deal for the midfielder.
If Howe can help Phillips return to his best form, then the prospect of him at the base of midfield alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes is a mouthwatering one, but there is the risk that he could continue to be frustrated when it comes to his performances and fitness.
