Alexander Isak is set to become Newcastle’s fourth senior signing this summer, meaning a new shirt number will need to be handed out.
The 22-year-old is on the brink of a £59million move to St James’ Park, and is on Tyneside to finalise a deal.
A club record deal for the striker will delight supporters, many of which will want his name on the back of their new Toon shirts. But what number could he don for the Magpies?
Current shirt number not available for Isak
Isak has been with Real Sociedad since 2019 and has always worn the same number. He’s been their number 19 for the past three seasons, and began season four with it on his back.
However, he won’t be able to be Newcastle’s number 19. That currently belongs to defender Javi Manquillo, although there has been speculation that he could leave the club this summer.
Regardless, it feels very unlikely that the Spaniard will have his number taken off of him. With the club hoping Isak can feature on Sunday against Wolves, an immediate decision will need to be made over his shirt number.
Instead, Isak will have to pick one of the vacant numbers that are currently available at Newcastle. Luckily for him, one of his old numbers is not being worn by any of Eddie Howe’s players.
Old number feels most likely as Newcastle close in on deal
When Isaac Hayden joined Norwich City earlier this summer, he vacated the number 14 shirt at Newcastle. And that is a jersey that Isak has worn before.
He was Borussia Dortmund’s number 14 throughout his time in Germany, whom he joined in 2017.
That is the lowest number available at Newcastle right now. It feels incredibly likely that that’s what he will wear.
Other options include 15, which was previously worn by Kieran Trippier until he swapped to number two earlier this summer. 16 is also available after Jeff Hendrick joined Reading on loan.
However, given his history with the number and the fact it’s often deemed an attacking one (see Thierry Henry), we are predicting Alexander Isak to wear 14 for Newcastle United.
