Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card during their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

It was a moment of madness from the 23-year-old, and one he can have no complaints about.

Referee John Brooks initially gave Nicolas Jackson a yellow card for the incident, but the official was quickly sent to the monitor by VAR. The decision was overturned, and Jackson was given his marching orders.

Eddie Howe was furious on the touchline after Sven Botman had been elbowed by the Senegal international, and he could not believe that Jackson had not been shown a straight red card immediately.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca suggested that the Newcastle United fans influenced Jackson’s red card, but replays were damning and showed there was no saving him.

Chelsea picked up the tempo after Jackson’s sending off, but they were ultimately without one of their biggest goal threats.

Newcastle compounded the misery when Bruno Guimaraes’ deflected effort looped over Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez just before stoppage time, ensuring the Magpies moved up to third in the Premier League table.

According to journalist Rahman Osman, Jackson is ‘very upset’ with himself over the sending off against Newcastle.

The 23-year-old wanted to fight for his team and was eager not to be bullied by the Newcastle defence.

He concluded by saying his sending off was ‘regrettable’.

Jackson’s red card was not the only controversial incident that came from the game. Maresca did not shake Jason Tindall’s hand on the touchline after the Newcastle assistant manager argued with Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

Newcastle staff recognised the Chelsea game as the biggest of the season. A huge test in the run-in to the end of the Premier League season, but Howe’s side passed with flying colours.

The Magpies capitalised on Manchester City’s misfortune as well. Pep Guardiola’s side surprisingly drew against already relegated Southampton, allowing Newcastle to leapfrog them into third.
