When Newcastle United play at St James’ Park, they are a different beast.

Eddie Howe has turned St James’ Park into a fortress since becoming manager, with his team rarely letting the Newcastle fans down when they play on Tyneside.

While there have been some question marks about the atmosphere this season, there have been no issues with the performances at St James’ Park. As it stands, the only clubs who have beaten the Magpies at SJP this season are Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

We have seen Newcastle triumph over Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Those games have been incredible, with Eddie Howe’s players always delivering when they are at home.

It has been a bit of a different story on the road, which is something for Newcastle to work on as we approach the halfway stage of what is proving to be another special season.

But just like the previous campaign, St James’ Park is a special place to play football. Howe has found the magic formula, and is not shy of encouraging his players to involve the crowd as much as possible.

What Eddie Howe is getting the Newcastle players to do

According to the Athletic, Eddie Howe has been encouraging his players to do what they can to gee up supporters and make some noise.

We see this time and time again from the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon. They are always keen to flap their arms after winning a tackle, orchestrating fans to increase the decibels inside the ground.

The Toon Army always respond with a roar, as they do their best to give the players an edge over their opponents.

It is wise from Howe to get his players to do this. It is a cliche but the crowd can be the 12th man, as we have seen so often over the past couple of years.

Just look at the PSG game at St James’ Park. The Ligue 1 giants got stage fright, completely overawed inside a cauldron of noise. That led to Newcastle enjoying one of their most famous nights ever.

The Newcastle crowd can be an offensive weapon, and Howe is right to try and get the most out of it whenever his team play at St James’ Park.
