Newcastle United have had a lot of injuries this season, but some have hurt them more than others.
The likes of Joe Willock and Joelinton not being available has hindered our midfield, but it gave Lewis Miley a chance to burst onto the scene. And what a star he looks like.
We were also without Sven Botman for a long time, but Jamaal Lascelles came in and re-established himself as a key figure on the pitch as well as off with his performances.
However, one injury has hurt Newcastle more than the rest, and that is Nick Pope‘s.
The England international has been missing since December, having undergone shoulder surgery after injuring himself during a 1-0 win over Manchester United at St James’ Park.
It was a devastating blow at the time, and it continues to hurt the Magpies. Eddie Howe has had to put his faith in Martin Dubravka, which has brought about mixed results. The 35-year-old has done well, but there are certain aspects of his game that make Newcastle a worse team.
And that is why Howe was so gutted in the immediate aftermath of Pope’s injury.

Eddie Howe devastated about Nick Pope injury after beating Man United
According to the Athletic, Eddie Howe was immediately ‘crestfallen’ in the aftermath of Pope’s injury. They state that Toon coach Graeme Jones was also ‘downbeat’ following what was a spectacular performance against Man United.
Newcastle were outstanding that night, but one moment swamped that positivity.
Since that win, Newcastle have not been the same. Dubravka is a good shot-stopper, but the Newcastle defence is much shakier with him behind it.
Whereas Pope commands his box and is a great sweeper, Dubravka can often be shy. It has resulted in Howe’s side shipping far too many goals, a lot of which have been comical to witness.
Newcastle were mean at the back last season, but that is currently not the case. We are limp, and that is largely down to the goalkeeper situation.
It seems like Howe was fearful of this happening as soon as Pope was forced off, and his nightmare has came true.
Fortunately, it could soon be coming to an end. It has been claimed that Pope is not far away from returning to training, which will be music to the ears of everyone associated with Newcastle United.
