Newcastle United have, as ever, been dealing with injury problems this season.
While the problems haven’t mounted just yet, Eddie Howe has been without some key players already at times.
Indeed, Alexander Isak may be close to returning but has missed the last three games with a broken toe. Kieran Trippier, meanwhile, is expected to miss the next few games for Newcastle due to a hamstring injury.
The injury crisis at Newcastle got so bad last season that pundit Joe Cole questioned exactly what was going on behind the scenes, so there is naturally a frustration about players missing games once more.
It, however, sadly is just part and parcel of the game.
Another absentee of late has been Callum Wilson. The striker hasn’t featured yet this season but there was hope of seeing him back in action against Brighton on Saturday, though Howe appeared to suggest they won’t be taking any risks when speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference.
The idea of Wilson missing many more games is obviously hugely frustrating but some positive insight has emerged.

According to journalist Joel Bland on social media platform X, Wilson was telling people close to him earlier this week that he’d be fine to face the Seagulls.
Hopefully, that means a return is now imminent. Isak, for all his quality, hasn’t been in great form yet this season and could surely do with the added cover and competition.

Injuries aside, few would doubt Wilson has been an excellent signing for Newcastle when fit.
Still, it seems as if the striker is approaching the long goodbye at St James’ Park.
