What Callum Wilson is finding ‘frustrating’ about Newcastle United right now

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson is eager to return from his injury. The Toon number nine hasn’t featured since the 1-1 draw with Manchester United in December.

The squad is currently out in Dubai for training and team bonding. Even injured players like Wilson and Kieran Trippier have travelled with the team.

Wilson spoke on his desire to come back on the Footballer’s Football Podcast. He told co-host Michail Antonio that it’s no fun watching everyone else play and train.

“If anything it’s frustrating,” Wilson said.

“I want to be playing, I want to be training, I want to be doing all the things that a footballer does. I don’t want to be stuck in the gym when everyone’s outside having fun, scoring goals, this and that.

“It seems good from the outside, but when you’re actually in it it’s not what it seems.”

Wilson’s return will give Newcastle a boost and hopefully even more goals

Newcastle have managed to cope very well without Wilson. They signed Chris Wood in January but, from a goals perspective, he hasn’t done as well as he’d like to.

In 2022 the Magpies went on an unbeaten run of nine games, which saw them shoot up the table. They beat the likes of Everton, Aston Villa, Brentford and Brighton.

Wilson’s return will provide more consistency in terms of a goalscorer. The Toon have got goals from a number of different players. However, Wilson remains Newcastle’s top scorer.

As the Magpies look to move further away from the relegation zone and push for the top 10, Wilson could play his part. Both him and Trippier are targeting a return against Crystal Palace at the end of April.

It makes you wonder what the Toon will be capable of when those two are back, considering the run of form Newcastle had without Wilson and a portion of it without Trippier.

The hunger shown by Wilson on his podcast will please some fans. He’s clearly someone who loves the game and just wants to get back as soon as possible.

Wilson loves his football which is an attitude that we can all get behind. Let’s hope he has the hunger for goals too.
