Newcastle have scouted Darwin Nunez 'extensively' says reporter

Newcastle United’s recruitment team are big fans of Darwin Nunez.

That’s according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who spoke about the forward on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

With Premier League safety suddenly looking a lot more likely, attentions are beginning to turn to the transfer business Newcastle could do this summer.

They certainly made a splash in January, with Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes arriving. The new recruits have impressed, playing a key role in the Magpies’ surge away from the drop zone.

More new faces will arrive in the summer, with up front likely to be an area that is addressed when the transfer window opens. Callum Wilson’s fitness record is a concern, while Chris Wood has only scored once since his £25million move.

So what about Benfica forward Darwin Nunez?

‘Surprise’ Newcastle didn’t move for Darwin Nunez in January

Speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, reporter Chris Waugh discussed the Magpies’ interest in the 22-year-old.

“He’s someone Newcastle, certainly Steve Nickson the head of recruitment, has liked for a long while, they’ve watched a lot,” Waugh said.

“There was almost surprise in January that they didn’t make a bid in the end because there has been a lot of interest. They’ve watched him extensively.”

Nunez would be a star for Newcastle

Newcastle were heavily linked with Nunez during the January transfer window. It has even been reported that the Magpies will reignite their interest in the summer.

The Mirror stated last month that the Magpies will make fresh moves for Nunez and Sven Botman.

The Uruguayan striker would certainly be a coup for Newcastle. He’s one Europe’s most in-demand forwards at the moment. So far this season he’s found the net 26 times in all competitions.

He’s a Champions League quarter finalist with Benfica, scoring the goal that put them into the final eight at Ajax’s expense. His side will now play Liverpool in the next round.

Nunez would cost a huge amount of money, but could be worth every penny at just 22-years-old. You’re looking at a player who has the potential to get even better, and could be the club’s main striker for 10 years. He could be Newcastle’s Sergio Aguero.

Getting him to St James’ Park could be difficult given the amount of clubs interested, but he’s certainly a player the Toon recruitment team have their eye on.

Nunez looks readymade for the Premier League. Hopefully that’s proven with a move to Newcastle.
