Newcastle United have got some major business done behind the scenes ahead of the January transfer window.

As Paul Mitchell works on his plan of attack for January, Newcastle United have also had some contractual situations to address.

After plenty of speculation, it has now been confirmed that Anthony Gordon has signed a new deal to keep him at St James’ Park. Newcastle have tied down one of their best and most important players, despite uncertainty over his future during the summer.

Rumours of a move to Liverpool will now come to an end, and the 23-year-old can fully focus on playing for the Magpies. It is going to be really exciting to see Gordon kick on, as it is very clear he can get even better under the management of Eddie Howe.

Anthony Gordon reacts after signing new Newcastle contract

Following the announcement, Gordon took to his official Instagram account to deliver a message to fans about his new long-term deal. Geordie Boot Boys understand that Gordon’s new contract runs until 2030 and does not include a release clause.

The £40million man has posted a picture of himself alongside Eddie Howe and Toon sporting director Paul Mitchell, as he expresses his delight at committing his future to Newcastle United.

He wrote: “So proud to have signed a new long term deal. I’ve loved every minute of playing for this club, since the moment I signed. Some amazing memories so far and still so much more to achieve.”

The England international received multiple replies, with teammates Nick Pope and Jacob Murphy happy to see Gordon extend his stay on Tyneside.

There were also messages of support from former Newcastle defender Paul Dummett and former Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi.

Close friend and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones also commented, writing: “Congrats brother, well deserved.”

Elsewhere, there was a message from Nottingham Forest winger and Toon transfer target Anthony Elanga, who commented: “Congrats bro.”

Newcastle are interested in Anthony Elanga

Elanga is happy to see Gordon commit his future to Newcastle, just months after he missed out on a move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies tried to sign the Sweden international in June, but failed. He was floated as an option to move to Newcastle as part of the Elliot Anderson deal, but Newcastle got Odysseas Vlachodimos instead.

Toon officials then made a fresh move for the former Manchester United winger on deadline day. However, Newcastle’s late approaches for Elanga were rejected, as Mitchell desperately scrambled to save the Magpies’ summer.

He was unable to, and that is why there is big pressure on Newcastle to deliver in the transfer market when January arrives.

Newcastle’s priority is to sign a winger, rather than a centre-back. That could result in a fresh approach for Elanga, who remains on the Magpies’ radar.

It has been reported by the Athletic that Elanga is still a target for Newcastle, and it will be interesting to see if Mitchell goes back in for the 22-year-old. If he does, Newcastle could end up having Gordon on one wing and Elanga on the other, which would give Eddie Howe even more speed in attack.
