‘What a player’… Allan Saint-Maximin was amazed by what 26-year-old Newcastle star did on Saturday

Newcastle United were nowhere near their best on Saturday, but Allan Saint-Maximin was still blown away by something that one of his former Toon teammates did.

The Magpies were held to a 4-4 draw by Luton Town, and actually had to come from two goals down to rescue a point. It was an enthralling game, but one that Eddie Howe will have expected to win.

However, Newcastle were not able to capitalise on their sensational performance away to Aston Villa, and have now failed to beat Luton home and away this season. First they lost at Kenilworth Road, and now this.

It was a really disappointing result, but there were at least some moments of magic from the men in black and white. Harvey Barnes’ goal on his return was outstanding, while Allan Saint-Maximin really enjoyed Bruno Guimaraes‘ role in Newcastle’s third goal.

As Newcastle looked to get back in the game, Bruno Guimaraes produced a moment of magic. His cross with the outside of his boot found Kieran Trippier, who halved the deficit with a left-footed volley.

It was an out of this world assist by Bruno, and one that caught the attention of former Toon winger Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman shared a clip of Bruno’s assist on his Instagram story, adding the caption: “What a player.”

Bruno replied to the story, writing: “Miss you everyday bro.”

Bruno tried his best to grab Newcastle a winner

Bruno admits he misses Saint-Maximin, and his departure last summer was a product of the club struggling to deal with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. In the end, it was his departure that unlocked the door for Newcastle to sign Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes.

As for Bruno, he looked determined to turn Saturday’s game around. He played in a more advanced role in the second half, as the Magpies looked to salvage something out of a desperate situation.

They nearly won it too after some brilliance from the Brazilian. A genius bit of skill and another glorious cross from Bruno should have resulted in a goal, but Jacob Murphy could not apply the finishing touch.

Despite the efforts of the 26-year-old, Newcastle could only draw, and it is a massively disappointing result as they look to get their Champions League charge back on track in the second half of the season.
