‘The best’: St James’ Park’s atmosphere resonates with Chris Wood

Newcastle United striker Chris Wood is loving the atmosphere created by the supporters at St James’ Park. The New Zealand international netted his second Toon goal of the season on Friday night. The penalty was his first at the Magpies’ home ground.

When he arrived in January from Burnley for £25million (Sky Sports) questions were asked by some. It’s been a tough start for him as he hasn’t always got the service he’s needed.

But the forward has been extremely complimentary of the support and atmosphere of the club.

“Some of the nights I’ve had, this crowd were the best I’ve played in front of,” he told the Chronicle.

“It is fantastic to be able to pull on the shirt and play for this club in front of these fans. They are fantastic and it is nice we doing the business for them.”

If Wood thinks the atmosphere is great now, just wait until more success comes Newcastle’s way

It’s a real testament to the supporters that they’ve got behind Wood. It does seem that some football fans don’t have a lot of patience anymore. Whilst Wood does have Premier League experience, he’s joined a club for a large fee and is expected to lead the line.

However, the fact the striker has such high praise already for the atmosphere indicates how welcoming the fans have been. They’ve gotten behind him and, although it’s taken time, he’ll have confidence after netting his first St James’ Park goal.

Since the arrival of the new owners, there’s no doubt Newcastle’s home ground feels like a fortress once again. But this is only the beginning. Imagine what the atmosphere will be like when more success starts to come their way. Wood might only be just experiencing a small taste of what some of the Newcastle fans are capable of.

Even when they’re mathematically secure safety, we will see even more positivity across Tyneside. With the Magpies 10 points clear, it should happen sooner rather than later.

They have another home game coming up this weekend against Leicester City. After three losses away from home in a row, Wood and company will hope extend their unbeaten run at St James’ Park.
