Santiago Munoz scored his first Newcastle United goal last night.

Finally, the dream begins. Munoz joined the club in the summer, in a move that caught a lot of attention from the mainstream media – simply because of his name.

The Magpies agreed a deal for the real life Santiago, whose name is frighteningly close to the main character’s in ‘Goal!’, a football film that involved Newcastle.

A lot of eyebrows were raised. Some saw it as a PR stunt. Those fears only intensified when it took so long for the Mexican forward to make his debut.

But Munoz is featuring more and more now, and has finally scored his first Toon goal.

Hopefully the first goal of many for Santiago Munoz

The youngster was involved in an incredible game at St James’ Park, where the Magpies’ Under-23s side took on West Brom.

Elliott Dickman’s team were 2-0 down at half time, but rallied to win a seven-goal thriller 4-3.

Munoz started up front for the Magpies, and kicked off the comeback in the 51st minute. You can see a video of his goal below.

It was an excellent goal from the on-loan forward. He timed his run into the box brilliantly, and did what all good strikers should do – he headed it low and aimed for the corner. Munoz sent it back across the goalkeeper, and into the net to kick off a Newcastle comeback.

The young Magpies went 3-2 up thanks to goals from Niall Brookwell and Nathan Carlyon, only for the Baggies to equalise in the 86th minute.

But there was still one more goal in it, with Josh Scott bagging a 90th minute winner.

It was a memorable night at St James’ Park for the Newcastle Under-23s. They showed real character to come from behind.

It was also a memorable night for Munoz, who hopefully scored the first of many goals in the famous black and white.
