Newcastle United signed one Italy international during the summer transfer window, but they tried to make it two.
After discovering that Nicolo Barella was too expensive, the Magpies moved swiftly to bring in his international teammate Sandro Tonali. And following his arrival, Newcastle still had their eye on further recruits from Serie A.
Eddie Howe wanted a left-back during the summer transfer window, and got one in the shape of Lewis Hall. He has initially arrived on loan from Chelsea, but his deal will become permanent next summer.
However, before Hall, Newcastle were looking at some much bigger names, and there was speculation that the Magpies wanted to sign Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco.
Newcastle showed an interest in the Champions League finalist, and even held talks with the 25-year-old according to a report from Football Transfers.

But Dimarco stayed put, and it now sounds like he is going to commit his long-term future to his current employers Inter Milan.
Fabrizio Romano shares update on Federico Dimarco’s future
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Inter are planning to hold talks with Dimarco to extend his contract at the San Siro.
He wrote on Twitter: “Inter will advance on Federico Dimarco’s new deal talks very soon. Negotiations will take place to extend Italian LB’ s contract.”
Romano also shared quotes on Dimarco from Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta, who said: “Dimarco deserves new deal, he loves the club and we will negotiate as soon as possible.”

Newcastle went for youth instead
With Dimarco looking set to sign a new contract with Inter, that should close the door on a possible move to Newcastle in the near future.
However, in truth, that door closed as soon as Hall signed on the dotted line at St James’ Park.
The 19-year-old is one for the future, but the club genuinely believe they have signed someone with a huge amount of potential who can develop into a top class player.
With Hall and Tino Livramento, Newcastle should have their fullbacks for the next 10 years.
That is why Hall is a better investment than Dimarco or other left-backs linked with the Magpies, such as Kieran Tierney.
Newcastle have got someone who they can grow and develop, and will reap the rewards in the coming years.
While Dimarco would have had a more instant impact, Newcastle will be confident that they made the right decision in snapping up the teenager.
